On October 6th, Chris Lalonde grabbed a wrench and removed the front tire of his fixed-gear bike so we could throw it in the back of my car and head to Detroit. This shoot was spontaneous and not planned out completely, just the way I like to shoot. There was a Detroit Tigers game going on so finding a spot to park was a challenge. When we finally settled for a spot outside of an abandoned building we noticed crowds of people assembling themselves for the game. That’s the direction we headed as I ran behind Chris on his bike. I hadn’t done a lot of action shots and I would have liked to get more full-body shots with the bike downtown. However, I also wanted to keep a very shallow depth of field so nothing around Chris would be too recognizable. This meant I had to be up-close and personal with my 24-70 f/2.8L lens shooting at 1/250 and at ISO 50. I wanted the impression of a crowd to be looked at, not the crazy people themselves with face-paint staring at the camera. We made our way up and down the streets, stopping for a smoke break while more passersby watched us and probably wanted to know what the hell we were doing. I mean, I don’t think I saw anyone else riding a bike through the crowd like Chris was.
