This series deals with iconography juxtaposed with environments on the brink of collapse. View all 11 images from this series in it’s now slightly less long title, Commercialism will be the New Symbol of Status.
As entertainment constantly reinvents itself iconography strives to remain based on imaginary principles, principles that are residing on top of sand (or in this case abandoned environments). I decided to use “commercialism” and “hollywood” together because I don’t believe they can co-exist together indefinitely.
Doing this series has greatly expanded my knowledge of shadow and light. In many ways, I find these satisfying because of the limited options I have for myself. All of these objects were shot by me at some point in time during the last 2-3 years and placed together when the lighting matched.
The images in this series were taken in an abandoned school for the blind, somewhere in Ohio. I believe the name of this school was something like “The Klinging House” but I’m not positive on that. As for the statues, dolls, etc. Those were taken from a variety of places and I used objects that matched the surrounding areas as a test for myself.
